Posture: Equal Weight on Feet

Since your very first appointment with us here at Hazeldean Family Chiropractic Clinic, we have stressed the importance of good posture.

Regardless of what you’re doing throughout the day, the ability to remain conscious of the way you are sitting or standing can have a massive effect on your spinal health.

A straight neck, head, and spine are vitally important, but it’s important to remember that your stance — and your posture — begin from the ground up.

Think about all the times you’ve been forced to wait while standing. It happens every day. You could be in line at the grocery store, waiting for your bus to arrive, even while counting down the last minutes for your dinner to finish cooking.

All of us have a habit shifting our weight from side to side on our feet. It just feels more comfortable. The problem is that this shifting pushes everything from feet upwards out of alignment. Your knees, hips, back, and even your head, are not lined up properly for optimum posture.

These movements, even though they feel harmless at the time, accumulate over time into spinal subluxations. People who are forced to stand for long periods often complain of hip and lower back pain. All of those weight shifts have been forcing their spines out of alignment for years.

The next time you’re on your feet and forced to wait, concentrate on your stance. You will feel just as comfortable standing with equal weight on both feet, approximately shoulder-width apart. From there, pull up your spine and stand tall. Now you’re doing right by your posture!

Shifting weight from foot to foot can be a hard habit to break, but making a concerted effort to stand properly whenever you’re on your feet will do wonders for not only your posture, but your spinal health as a whole.
