As the weather gets colder, it’s common to be inundated with the reminder that “flu season” is on the horizon.

Doctors, pharmacies, and even some grocery stores are reminding us to come in for our flu shots. Hand sanitizer seems to spring up everywhere, and flu medication commercials begin to run nonstop alongside the holiday advertisements.

However, we must remember that influenza can strike at any season. The problem is it goes hand in hand with several factors that often occur as the weather turns chilly.

Holiday stress plays a major factor in suppressing our immune system health. Our regular lives are busy enough, but when you factor in the busyness of events such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, many of us can feel overwhelmed. A bursting schedule, combined with financial burdens of holiday shopping can often lead to a lack of proper sleep – serving as another blow to your immune system.

There is plenty you can do to boost your own health:

  • Exercise is one of the best ways to maintain a strong immune system. Don’t let the chaos of the season take hold – stick to that gym schedule, and go for walks whenever the weather allows it. You’ll stay healthier and lower your stress at the same time.
  • Watch that sugar intake. Treats are easy to come by at this time of year. Don’t feel the need to completely abstain, but keep your healthy meals a priority, with lean proteins, greens, and lots of water. You will feel better in the long run, and avoid those extra holiday pounds in the process.
  • With the days becoming shorter, seeing the sun for lengthy periods is a rarity for most of us. If it’s sunny and you’re able to get out for a walk, do it. You’ll boost your vitamin D intake, which is vital for a strong immune system. If the weather and time won’t allow for it, invest in a quality vitamin D supplement and remember to take it every day.
