My Chiropractic Beginnings

“Growing up, I didn’t even know what a chiropractor was,” remembers Dr. Erin McLaughlin. “My first experience with one was during a summer job after finishing high school. I worked as an administrative assistant in a wellness-oriented clinic, and became a chiropractic patient following a recommendation from a fellow employee. I had no idea that I was about to experience major changes in my health!”

“After several months of chiropractic adjustments, I noticed my breathing was starting to improve. I had been completely dependent on inhalers for many years prior, and wasn’t sure I really believed that my body could actually get better on its own. Sure enough, after about two years, I no longer needed any puffers and that was a great feeling! It was about that time I realized that chiropractic was what I wanted to do with my life. If I could have such a dramatic change in my own health, I wanted to learn how I could help other people do the same.”

Education

Dr. McLaughlin completed her Bachelor of Science degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland, in her hometown of St. John’s. From there, she moved to Davenport, Iowa to begin her studies at Palmer College of Chiropractic. “Palmer College is considered ‘The Fountainhead’ of Chiropractic, so I knew it was the right place to be. It was during my years at Palmer that I learned how the human body functions and the amazing power for healing and health that exists. I was amazed and excited by the principle that your body needs no help to be well, just no interference. By the end of my studies, I thought I was ready to hit the ground running and start helping others achieve their own health goals.”

Following graduation, Dr. McLaughlin began an intense six-month training period at a very busy Ottawa chiropractic clinic. That was when a major shift in thinking happened in terms of how she wanted to serve her community. “During my time working under two incredible mentors, I saw nothing short of chiropractic miracles in the lives of their patients who were undergoing corrective care. Corrective care is a very scientific and proactive approach to regaining and maximizing your health. I knew it was the only way to truly serve my own patients and allow them to see those amazing transformations in their lives. I moved further away from the acute-care, pain-relief model we were taught in school, and became trained in the corrective care model. Taking a proactive approach instead of managing symptoms is the best way to maximize your potential for abundant health and happiness throughout your lifetime.”

My Chiropractic Passion Lies in Seeing Entire Kanata Families Getting Well Together

“Having seen hundreds of families over the years, my excitement and passion for helping people achieve their best health possible has grown immensely. Since the birth of my first child in 2009, I feel even more equipped to care for young children in my practice and communicate with parents about the importance of having their children’s spines checked immediately after birth.

“I believe it is every child’s birthright to have their spine and nervous system checked as early in life as possible, so they have every opportunity to start life the right way. It is so critical for their developing nervous system and body to be functioning properly immediately after birth, as the birth process can often be very traumatic, causing undetected damage to the spine. All children should grow up knowing what true health is, and that we don’t need to rely on medications to keep us healthy.

“I am very excited about the amazing chiropractic results we are seeing in our Kanata chiropractic office! Year after year, I am blessed to witness the restoration of health in so many lives, and it really excites me to see a person’s spine return to normal alignment on an x-ray. That means their body is functioning and healing better than ever before! Chiropractic can help other health conditions, too.”

On a Personal Note

Dr. Erin McLaughlin & Family

Dr. Erin McLaughlin & Family

“My husband, Erik, and I were blessed to welcome our first daughter, Reese, into our lives in 2009. Our second daughter, Fiona, was born in 2012.  Chiropractic care throughout both of my pregnancies allowed me to not only feel great, but also to experience natural, drug-free births in our home. We have so much fun watching Reese and Fiona grow, reach milestones, and become quite independent. In my personal time, I love to prepare nutritious meals for my family, work out at the gym, go for walks, and spend time with our families in Ottawa, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland.

“I get adjusted at least once a week to make sure that I maintain a healthy posture, spine, and nervous system. I don’t normally have any aches or pains, but I know that regular adjustments will keep me functioning at a high level. I almost never get a cold or flu, something I never would have thought possible before corrective care of my spine. I look forward to raising my own family naturally, and being a good role model for a healthy lifestyle.”

Outside the Office

“Over the past 7 years of partnership with Chiropractors with Compassion, I have been blessed to sponsor eight children in Kenya, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and India. I feel it is so important to reach our hands around the world and do what is possible to improve the lives of others. A meaningful quote from one of my mentors is, ‘The only way to transform the world around these children is to transform the world within these children.’ I welcome each of you to reach your hands out as well. Visit www.compassion.ca to see how what’s in your heart can transform the life of a child.
