Brand New Research: The Link Between Forward Head Posture and College Athletic Performance

focused tennis playerA brand-new study just released (Journal of Sport Rehabilitation, 2022 Jul 22; 1-10, Moustafa, Kim, Harrison) has made a connection between college athletic performance in functional skills and forward head posture!

This study examined college athletes’ performance in 4 areas: T-Test Agility (their ability to move forward, backward, and side to side), Leg Power, Stork Static Balance (standing on one leg as long as possible), and Y-Balance (dynamic balance and functional symmetry).

It was determined that athletes with forward head posture had altered sensorimotor processing (how the input of sensory information results in a response or motor output) and had less efficient skill-related physical fitness compared to athletes with normal head posture.

We’ve known for decades that forward head posture causes increased loading on the spine, leading to degenerative spinal breakdown and arthritis. We’ve also known that forward head posture can cause painful symptoms like headaches, migraines, neck pain, and arm/hand pain and numbness.

We now have conclusive scientific evidence proving a link between forward head posture and athletic performance! This is ground-breaking research and needs to be shared far and wide! As Corrective Chiropractors, our goal is to improve spine and nerve system function by correcting postural misalignments, including the all-too-common forward head posture. We’re here to help…athletes and beyond!
