Pregnancy Care in Kanata

Pregnant mom with low back support
At Hazeldean Family Chiropractic, we have been caring for pregnant women in our community since 2004. You don’t have to be in pain during your pregnancy! Many women are not aware that chiropractic care can help with the discomforts, aches, and pains that may occur during pregnancy as their body changes and prepares for labour and delivery.

Part of a healthy pregnancy is feeling your best, and we believe chiropractic care and a healthy pregnancy go hand in hand.

Handling With Care

Dr. Erin McLaughlin and Dr. Pierre Paradis are trained in the Webster Technique, designed to provide expecting mothers with gentle care. The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment of the pelvis and sacrum. The goal is to reduce the effects of sacral or sacroiliac subluxation and dysfunction, thereby improving neuro-biomechanical function in the pelvis.

Sacral or pelvic subluxations can contribute to pain during pregnancy, as well as difficulties with labour and delivery. We correct any misalignments or dysfunction in the pelvis, which helps with the balance and biomechanics of the sacroiliac and lower lumbar spine joints.

For the comfort of our pregnant patients, our adjustment tables can accommodate for ease and comfort during all stages of the pregnancy. We use custom pregnancy pillows to allow the mother-to-be to lie safely and easily face-down on the table. The pillows have an area where the mom’s belly fits right in, with absolutely no pressure on the baby. Most of our moms tell us it’s the most comfortable time during their pregnancy. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is gentle, safe, and effective.

A Blueprint for Your Pregnancy

Here’s what Mom should expect:

During the first trimester, support your body with nutrition, rest, and gentle movement, and ensure optimal brain-body connection with regular chiropractic adjustments.

In the second trimester, you may experience altered posture due to changes in your centre of gravity. Your growing belly puts pressure on the lower back and hips.
In the third trimester, you may have round ligament and pubic symphysis, discomfort, lower back pain, and sciatica from postural changes. Some women experience an aggravation of previous injuries due to the effects of the relaxin hormone.

After the Baby Is Here

It’s important for moms to get adjusted after the birth, because they may feel stiff and sore or have problematic areas related to the labour and delivery. Some women experience numbness in the lower back, sacrum, or pain in the legs. Getting adjusted as soon as possible may really help with recovery.

We also educate our new moms about correct posture and alignment when feeding their baby and supporting their body with pillows. At-home corrective exercises and stretches may also be helpful with postural issues.
