If the “check engine” light in your car suddenly turned on, would you cover it with a piece of black tape so you wouldn’t have to see it? Of course not. You understand that the light is a warning. While your car might continue to run for a while, ignoring that signal could eventually lead to a much bigger — and more expensive — problem.
So why do we often treat our bodies differently?
Pain, stiffness, headaches, numbness, fatigue — these are your body’s warning lights. They are signals that something is not functioning the way it should. Yet many people respond by reaching for medication to silence the symptom rather than asking an important question: Why is this happening?
Medication absolutely has its place. In some situations, it is necessary and helpful. However, relying on medication regularly to mask symptoms does not correct the underlying issue. It may provide short-term relief, but it does not restore proper function. In fact, when symptoms are dulled without addressing the cause, the underlying problem may continue to worsen quietly over time.
In chiropractic care, our focus is different. Rather than chasing symptoms, we look for the root cause — often related to joint dysfunction, poor movement patterns, spinal misalignments, or nervous system interference. When the spine and nervous system are functioning properly, the body is better able to heal, regulate, and perform the way it was designed to.
Ask yourself: What is the bigger health concern — the symptom you feel, or the cause behind it?
True, long-term health comes from identifying and correcting the source of the problem, not simply covering up the warning light. If you’re experiencing persistent pain or recurring symptoms, consider seeking an evaluation to uncover the cause. Your body, like your car, performs best when problems are addressed at their source.
