Why Should My Child Be Checked by a Chiropractor?

In our practice, we always say babies need to be checked after birth, because the birth process can be difficult for some, and in fact, it can be downright traumatic. It’s widely known in the medical field that some interventions, like vacuum or forceps, may cause damage to the baby’s neck. And some babies delivered by c-section may experience neck problems, such as torticollis.

For older kids, they should be checked as they hit their developmental milestones, to ensure there are no abnormalities in the development of their skeletal system or their neurological system development.

And all the things that kids do—falling off their bike, playing sports in gym class, competitive sports, dance, gymnastics, sledding in the winter, you name it. There are thousands of things that support the need to be checked by a chiropractor.

Technology and Kids

There’s also the element of postural issues with overloaded backpacks, all the devices, the iPads and Chromebooks, and kids spending a ton of time online, especially over the last couple of years. Their posture has really suffered, and many have forward head posture and rounded shoulders. Young kids and teens are developing back pain, headaches, neck pain; symptoms we don’t usually see until a person’s in their twenties or thirties.

Tech neck has become a real problem and may lead to headaches, migraines, even problems with the jaw, like TMJ, if not addressed. Ultimately, if it’s not corrected, when they’re in their adult years, it really does predispose them to spinal degeneration or arthritis, and a host of other problems.

To help them, we get an X-ray to have a clear picture of their alignment posture on the inside. Then we prescribe the right exercises to use to restore a healthier posture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can children see a chiropractor?

Yes! We care for children of all ages, including infants. Chiropractic helps support healthy spinal and nervous system development as kids grow.

At what age can a child start chiropractic care?

From birth. Even a gentle checkup can ensure the spine is aligned and developing properly after the birthing process.

How are children’s adjustments different from adults?

Pediatric adjustments use extremely light fingertip pressure — comparable to checking a tomato’s ripeness. Kids usually find them gentle and even fun.

Can chiropractic help with posture and screen time strain?

Absolutely. Kids today spend a lot of time looking down at screens, which can affect posture and lead to neck or back strain. Gentle adjustments and posture coaching can help counteract these effects.

Can chiropractic care help with colic or ear infections?

Chiropractors don’t treat these conditions directly. However, by supporting a well-functioning spine and nervous system, chiropractic care may help the body better manage certain challenges.
