A trigger points is a tight, hypersensitive spot that can occur in any muscle in the body. Muscles in the human body are composed of cells known as fibers that are bundled together. The muscles fibers are surrounded by connective tissue and nerves. These muscle fibers contract and release, allowing movement and rest in the body.
When muscles become tight and contracted, muscle fibers become strained and form hard “nodules” which become swollen and tender. These nodules can also block off blood supply. When this occurs, the surrounding nerve cells become irritated sending pain signals to the region.
Trigger points are the most common form of musculoskeletal pain, especially in the neck and back, can cause pain immediately. Trigger points in a certain muscle can also cause referred pain in other regions. For example, if you have a knotted muscle in your shoulders, the referred pain can also cause headaches, toothaches or earaches.
What are the most common causes?
Sports injuries, repetitive motion, poor posture and improper bending and lifting are some of the most common causes of trigger point pain.
Nutritional deficiency can also be a contributing factor. When minerals and vitamins which are naturally found in the body become depleted, muscle strain and trigger points can result.
What should you do?
Don’t ignore it! Trigger point pain is often misdiagnosed because the resulting pain is similar to other injuries and conditions. Consult a trained health specialist.
Stretch gently before and after exercising and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Preventing dehydration will help muscles not to contract and become tense.
When exercising, perspiration causes a loss of vitamins and minerals in your system. It is important to replace these by taking supplements (potassium, calcium, magnesium).
To help relieve pain you can also use a trigger point massage ball. Move the ball to the affected muscle and apply as much body weight as you can tolerate until the muscle releases. Then roll the ball back and forth for a gentle massage.
